Meshtastic

Off-grid text messaging over cheap LoRa radios — no internet, no cell, no license.

What it is

Meshtastic turns an inexpensive radio board into a node on a self-healing mesh network. Each node can send and receive short text messages and share GPS location, and — crucially — every node relays for the others. A message hops node to node until it reaches you, so the network’s reach grows with every person who joins.

It runs over LoRa (Long Range) radio in a license-free band, so anyone can use it — no ham license, no SIM card, no monthly bill. Messages are encrypted with AES-256 by default. It’s a favorite for hiking, overlanding, events, emergency prep, and just covering a town with a community network.

// getting started

On the mesh in four steps

  1. Get a board

    Grab any supported LoRa device — a Heltec V3 is the easiest, cheapest start. Add a matching antenna.

  2. Flash Meshtastic

    Plug it in and use the official web flasher in Chrome or Edge. No command line — it does the firmware for you.

  3. Pair the app & set your region

    Install the Meshtastic app (Android, iOS, or web), connect over Bluetooth or USB, and set your LoRa region to US (915 MHz) so you’re legal and compatible.

  4. Say hi

    Send your first message on the default channel — then come show off your node in #meshtastic and find the local mesh.

New to LoRa entirely? The crew in Discord will happily talk you through your first build, no question too basic.

Build it with people who’ve done it.

Stuck on a board, an antenna, or a coverage gap? That’s exactly what #meshtastic is for.
